Novak Djokovic, this year’s Wimbledon winner, defeated Nick Kyrgios, who seemed to be dominating, until the final tie-breaker match. According to The Washington Post, “He won it by winning as he often does by solving an opponent until the solving starts to look like dismantling. He won it by gaining a homing read on Kyrgios’s booming serve, as befits a 35-year-old player long deemed the best-ever returner of serve.”
Novak Djokovic had a choppy year, but his season ended in greatness, as he achieved his seventh Wimbledon win. Because the United States requires a coronavirus vaccination to play, and Djokovic remains firmly unvaccinated, he will not get to play in the U.S. Open in August. So, Wimbledon might have been his last big game in 2022.
Djokovic won a match after match, and as is his habit, after he won the final watch against Kyrgios, he stooped down and munched on some blades of grass. For most of the match, Kyrgios spoke to his entourage in the audience, the chair umpire, and the tennis gods.
Kyrgios is known for his commentary during the matches, but according to Cindy Boren, “Nick Kyrgios received a warning from the chair umpire for excessive commentary as he held serve for a 3-2 lead in the third set.”
According to Kyrgios, a woman in the front row has had about “700 drinks” as he explained it. The umpire said he hadn’t heard it and Kyrgios responded that he had. Fortunately, it did not affect the course of what is an entertaining as all get-out matches.”
Todd Woodbridge, a former Wimbledon doubles champion, on the BBC. said, “After some very long matches, Kyrgios lost some of his usual adrenaline and bounciness. “When you have watched as many Kyrgios matches from the commentary booth as I have — when he is playing his best, he is full of adrenaline, but he’s come off that now and somehow he has to get that level up without any of the anxiety that goes with it.”
Even though Wimbledon my be Djokovic’s last big game for 2022, but he will go on to win many other games throughout the year.
