On June 22, 2022, the Conservancy of South Florida caught a record-breaking snake that weighed 215 pounds and was 18 feet long. It was the heaviest python that was to ever be caught in the state.

When the snake was taken in for further examination, 122 eggs were found, more than have ever been seen in a single python during a breeding cycle. Scientists also found something else: The Burmese python had digested a white-tailed deer. White-tailed deer play a huge role in helping endangered Florida panthers survive. If snakes like these eat all of them, the Florida panthers might starve.

Burmese Pythons ruin habitats, take food from endangered animals, and are a threat to humans. Because of this and Florida officials work to capture these dangerous creatures. One method has been to put a radio transmitter on a male python named Dionysus, whose attraction to females leads conservationists to egg-bearing reptiles. Last year, the state of Florida held a competition in which experts and amateurs could win prize money. Whoever hunted down the most Burmese pythons won. A total of 223 were killed.
