The Serbian tennis veteran, Novak Djokovic, destroyed his younger Australian opponent, Nick Kyrgios, in an epic final match at Wimbledon. The men’s-singles final match at “Center Court” in England was last Sunday. Djokovic won his fourth Wimbledon title in a row for a total of seven career Wimbledon titles, just behind the Swiss all-star, Roger Federer.

Wimbledon was founded in 1877, the first official tennis tournament in history. It’s also considered the most prestigious tennis tournament. It is one of the four tournaments* that are considered “Grand Slams.” (Check out mind-blowing facts about Wimbledon below)

His 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Kyrgios lifted him up to 21 total Grand Slam titles. This puts him one ahead of Roger Federer and one behind the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal. At one time in history, Federer had 16 Grand Slam titles; at the same time, Djokovic only had one.

Djokovic was built to win the match. The world’s best serve returner played Kyrgios, who has a serve stronger than steel. He won because he read Kyrgios’ serve and returned it better than anybody else could. Novak Djokovic’s calm attitude is what really won him the match, taking his time to outwit and disassemble his opponent. Kyrgios was whining about a yelp from the crowd on his serve.

Luckily for Djokovic, the win came just in time. Djokovic will not play in the US Open because he is unvaccinated.

This is the pinnacle of his year. He started off with an unfortunate experience in Australia. Djokovic got permission to play in the Australian Open. He arrived and practiced on the court for 11 days, but it was not until the tournament started that he faced deportation. Rafael Nadal the Australian Open, which Djokovic has a history of winning.

Emotionally, Djokovic has been through a lot this year. After losing to Nadal in Rome at the French Open, he steadied himself quickly.

Djokovic is up there with the gods of tennis. His unique style, his transformative offense, and calm attitude can orderly– and very steadily – dismantle formidable opponents.

Winning this year’s Wimbledon isn’t the end. It’s just another chapter in Djokovic’s historic tennis penmanship. Djokovic has the potential to become the GOAT of tennis.

*Grand Slam tournaments include Wimbledon, US Open, French Open, and Australian Open.
