Families and friends went to the new “Minions” movie this July 4th weekend in North America. The movie was a great success and the estimated sales over the weekend was around $127.9 million.

The new movie “Minions: The Rise of Gru”, aka Minions 2, is the fifth installment of the “Despicable Me” movie series. It tells a story about the funny adventures of Minions, a group of small, yellow, cylindrical creatures with one or two eyes.

The film features Steve Carell as Gru and Pierre Coffin as the voice of each Minion.

It was originally planned to release in 2020 and got postponed due to Covid 19 pandemic. It was finally released over the past weekend, on July 1st and become an immediate hit.

“It’s a tremendous debut,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution. “It’s playing very broadly across North America. Every single market is doing extraordinarily well.”

According to Comscore, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” is the most viewed movie over the July 4th holiday, followed by “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis”.
