In New York ManhattAnt (European ants) suddenly started appearing in apartments with no clue why or how. New Yorker Katie Guhl went on vacation at the end of May and when she came back, she reported that there were swarms of ants all over her kitchen. This is shocking because unlike cockroaches, ants aren’t common in New York. Another person reported that she lived on the 3rd floor and had never had problems with insects. Now they are trying to find out how they got there.

These ants most likely arrived in New York by ship. Ms. Kennett studies a specific ant called Lasius emarginatus which is not a native US ant. It is a European immigrant that possibly arrived in a boat. These and have not just been surviving they are thriving in New York. They have even been nicknamed the ManhattAnt. Ms. Kennett even said, “They are everywhere.”

ManhattAnts also climb a lot, and no one is sure how high they will climb. Ms. Kennett even found them all over the trees on Broadway and Times Square. Jerry Walsh encouraged people not to use poison because they won’t instantly die of it and will carry it around. This can mean crawling on your dishes which will make you think you’re experiencing a 24hr stomach poisoning virus, it’s just a mild case of stomach poisoning. They even clogged someone’s ant baits with dead ant bodies. This shows that these destructive ants need to go and that it’s causing trouble for many people.
