“Minions: The Rise of Gru” has been released and it is currently dominating the box office. On July 3, it managed to bring in $108.5 million in ticket sales and on July 4, it hit up to $125 million. This surpassed the previous July 4 movie, “Transformers: The Dark Moon” in the box office by almost $10 million. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is currently being played on 4,391 screens and it is another one of Universal Pictures’ big hits, followed by “Bad Guys” and “Sing 2.” It also proves that people are still going to theatres despite the pandemic.

Similar to “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Rise of Gru” waited for the perfect moment to be released, rather than to just immediately head into the theatres. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for ComScore, announced that “This became an event. It was a holiday weekend, the release date was perfect, the marketing was spot on.” Illumination and Universal Pictures have also had a good run with their other series “Despicable Me,” a series that focuses on Gru rather than the minions. In total, the Despicable Me series and their spinoffs made over $3.7 billion at the box office globally.
