A Russian goalie signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on May 7, and he was trying to get a spot in the Flyers’ training camp in the fall. However, he has been detained by his homeland’s government.

The goalie’s name is Ivan Fedotov, and he is an Olympian. Fedotov played for the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) in the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. He helped to win the silver medal for the ROC. He was detained in Russia for trying to get out of military service. Chuck Fletcher is the president of hockey operations and the general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers; Fletcher said that the Flyers are “aware of the reports and are investigating the situation.” Fedotov was detained on Friday, July 1, the same day that Brittney Griner’s trial started. Brittney Griner is an American basketball player, and she was arrested at an airport in Russia for carrying a vape container that had in it traces of hash oil, a drug containing cannabis. According to Griner’s supporters, Russia is using Griner as leverage because of the U.S. support of Ukraine during Russia’s war against its neighboring nation.

Fedotov was born in Finland and was raised in Russia. He played for Moscow, which was a team in the KHL, the Russian premier hockey league. Fedotov was arrested at a St. Petersburg ice rink and was brought to an army enlistment office. In the Canadian and U.S. hockey league, the NHL, Russian goalies are the stars. These include players like Andrei Vasilevskiy on the Tampa Bay Lightning, Igor Shesterkin on the New York Rangers, and Sergei Bobrovsky on the Florida Panthers. There are many U.S. teams that would love to have a Russian goalie playing for them, but the detainment of Fedotov could disrupt those hopes.

Ivan Fedotov is a great goalie, and that is why the Flyers chose him. However, now that his government may force him to join the army instead, he might not be able to play hockey anymore.
