Florida is the only state that did not pre-order COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as six months. Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, declared that there was no need for healthy children to receive vaccines and that there wasn’t enough proof.
“We have always maintained the position that the state of Florida has chosen not to be involved in the preordering or distribution of the vaccine for children under 5,” he said. “The state of Florida does not recommend the vaccine be administered to healthy children,” he added.
Florida did not pre-order the vaccines before June 14. Therefore, there will be no doses at the doctors’ offices in Florida during the first wave of vaccine shipments. Florida also missed the deadline of the second wave of pre-ordered doses. So, those doses will arrive days or weeks later than other states.
“The state of Florida intentionally missed multiple deadlines to order vaccines to protect its youngest kids,” Dr. Ashish K. Jha, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator.
Florida finally began to allow pediatricians, children’s hospitals and other physicians to order coronavirus vaccines, as well as their own supply of vaccines, for very young children, after facing contemptuous pressure from the public. Now, families in Florida will be able to get shots from the doctors office. The White House commended this move as an important first step.
“We are encouraged that after repeated failures by Governor DeSantis to order COVID-19 vaccines even after every other state had ordered, the State of Florida is now permitting health care providers to order COVID-19 vaccines for our youngest children,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. “We believe it is critical to allow parents everywhere to have the choice to get their kids vaccinated and have a conversation with their pediatrician or health care provider.”
