On May 11, 2022, several protests started during an Israeli army operation at the Jenin camp in the northern West Bank. Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot and killed while covering the protests.
Palestinian investigators found the bullet that killed Abu Akleh and claim that it was fired by an Israeli soldier.
“The [Israel Defense Force] investigation clearly concludes that Ms. Abu Akleh was not intentionally shot by an IDF soldier and that it is not possible to determine whether she was killed by a Palestinian gunman shooting indiscriminately… or inadvertently by an IDF soldier,” the Israeli military said.
Palestinian officials refused to share the bullet that killed Abu Akleh with the Israeli government and instead sent the evidence to the U.S. for investigation.
Abu’s family said publicly that they are hesitant about giving any evidence to U.S. officials.
