On Thursday, authorities in Muslim countries banned Disney’s latest movie, “Lightyear,” because there was a lesbian kiss scene.
Thirteen Muslim nations and the Palestinian territory restricted the latest Pixar film that was inspired by the astronaut hero Buzz Lightyear from “Toy Story.”
Countries that refused to show the film include Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the United Arab Emirates, Disney said.
The UAE Media Regulatory Office announced Monday it would ban the movie’s release based on what it said was “violation of the country’s media content standards,” the office wrote in a tweet.
The government authorities did not specify which standard this movie has violated, yet Executive Director Rashid Khalfan Al Nuaimi told Reuters it was because of including homosexual characters in it.
The majority of Muslims consider the LGBTQ community to be immoral. Therefore, for some communities or regions, people might even be put into the jail or be given a death penalty due to their sexuality.
The stars in this film called the decision of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) upsetting. Chris Evans, who voiced one of the main characters, told the media that being a part of making social progress was wonderful, but it was also frustrating when some places have not “caught up.”
Disney did allow cutting and editing films in the past to satisfy the UAE market. This lesbian kissing scene in this movie was originally being cut too, but it was re-added to the film in March, after Pixar employees accused Disney of censorship.
