Several days following football star Maradona’s death in November 2020, a health care panel found his treatment deficit and a homicide trial was ordered.

Maradona died in Buenos Aires, at age 60. A few days after his death Argentine prosecutors launched an investigation into the doctors and nurses involved in his care.

It concluded that the footballer would have had a better chance of surviving with adequate treatment in an appropriate medical facility.

Those facing charges include Maradona’s personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, two doctors, two nurses, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and their boss. They have all denied responsibility for his death. All eight will be tried under the legal definition of homicide based on negligence committed in knowledge that may have led to a person’s death. The crime could carry an eight-to-25 year prison sentence. A date for the trial is yet to be set.

Mario Baudry, a lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons, said that the football legend was “in a situation of helplessness” by the time of his death. The legal proceedings were prompted by a complaint filed by two of Maradona’s daughters. Following their father’s brain operation, they raised concerns about his treatment.

News of his death threw the football world – and his home country, Argentina, – into deep mourning, with thousands of people walking by his coffin at the presidential palace.

No one could deny the damage that years of addiction did to his body or the debilitating effects following his brain surgery. Yet in Argentina, the 60-year-old was probably the greatest player ever to grace the pitch and he was taken too soon.

Demands for answers grew as things were uncovered about his treatment and the findings by the medical panel were highly incriminating.

In Argentina, thousands of fans surrounded his coffin in tears over three days of national mourning. The charges may provide them with answers over the circumstances behind the death of one of Argentina’s most talented players.
