Sloane Smith is the daughter of Alex Smith, an ex-NFL player, and Elizabeth Barry. The family posted on Instagram that “she is sweet, selfless, intelligent, hilarious, witty, fun-loving, an artist, a singer, and a dancing machine.”
The start of the problem
May 10, 2022, Sloane was hurried to the emergency room. That day, she started having stroke-like symptoms. After running an M.R.I., doctors informed the family that their only daughter had a large tumor in her brain. The family decided that the best thing was for Sloane to have surgery. They were anxious while waiting for the ten hours it took to complete. The Smiths wrote that “The 10-hour procedure was the most excruciating time of our lives. A clock has never moved so slowly.”
A big relief for the family
It was great news to the neurosurgeons and the family that the tumor was completely removed. They gratefully thanked the “amazing medical team, family, friends, acquaintances and even some strangers.”
Sloane is recovered and beaming
In the meantime, Sloane is “in her true form-bounced back from brain surgery like a rockstar! She didn’t skip a beat,” according to the Smiths. She is also “back to her bubbly self. Singing, dancing, laughing, and feeling good.” Alex says that “most of all she is an incredibly strong girl that has a ton of fight in her.”
Not so happily ever after
Unfortunately, the Smiths received some bad news. After many thorough tests, doctors conclude that Sloane’s tumor was malignant. This means that it could grow back. Because the tumor is rare, there are few past cases to reference. The Smiths are reaching out to professionals to seek the best approach to keep Sloane healthy going forward.
