Lil Nas X didn’t get nominated at the BET Awards (Black Entertainment Television) on Sunday night, which has made the artist furious. In a now-deleted tweet, he said: “thank you bet awards. An outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence!” And in the past three weeks, he had been teasing a diss track that repeated the phrase “F*** BET.”

Lil Nas X also thinks black people are getting snubbed regarding BET nominations. He wrote in another tweet that has since been deleted, “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world, and even when we make it to the top, mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”

“Unfortunately, this year, he was not nominated by BET’s Voting Academy, which is comprised of an esteemed group of nearly 500 entertainment professionals in the fields of music, television, film, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, influencers, and creative arts. No one from BET serves as a member of the Voting Academy,” BET said in a statement. In other words, the Voting Academy has 500 entertainment professionals, none of whom are from BET.

However, Lil Nas X is not the only person who feels this way. Two other famous songwriters, Drake and Frank Ocean, have been protesting against the Oscars and the Grammy awards for rejecting black artists. Just like Lil Nas X, Drake and Frank Ocean have previously won awards from the institutions they criticize.

The BET Awards may not seem as big a deal as the Grammys or the Oscars, but to some artists like Lil Nas X, the BET Awards are just as important. When someone on Twitter pointed out his Grammys, he replied, “this is my point exactly how can I get acknowledged by the most acclaimed award show in the world and then not even just one nomination from my own people? is that not crazy?”
