27-year-old Nick races through aisles, his heart racing. His eyes dart left and right as he searches desperately for it. Just as all hope is lost, he sees it. It’s there, sitting on the shelf, practically screaming his name. Nick hurriedly snatches it off, adrenaline in his heart pounding.
“It’s similar to the feeling of winning at a slot machine,” he says.
Surprisingly, it isn’t anything of much value, just a simple Squishmallow. Squishmallows are round, soft, and squeezable plush toys that can be found in many grocery stores. They are designed to look like animals and inanimate objects with adorable, sweet faces. Some rare Squishmallows also have disabilities and sexualities, making them inclusive compared to your average Hot Wheels or Barbies.
Although Squishmallow sales are surging in all age groups, Jazwares, the owner of Squishmallow’s parent company, has released statements saying that fans 18 years of age and older are leading the charge. Although Jazwares has done no advertising to promote the booming sales of Squishmallows, the stuffed animals were named the top-selling toy of 2022 in the U.S. and Canada, alongside name brands like Fisher-Price and Lego.
Sales of Squishmallows have surged since the toys debuted in 2017, but the greatest increase came in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic first started. Children sought treatments for anxiety and hyperactivity, and Squishmallows provided that haven.
“The success of Squishmallows was totally unexpected,” product designer Sunny Cho says. From a small business back in 2017 to a huge worldwide phenomenon, the brand continues to grow. There is no telling how far Squishmallows will go.
