On July 21, the world’s oldest male panda in captivity, An An, died at an amusement park zoo in Hong Kong on Thursday. The panda was 35, the equivalent of a human living until 105.
According to officials at Ocean Park, “The decision was reached after he showed steady signs of deterioration over the past few weeks.” Authorities also said that the panda’s food intake had declined as An An would stop consuming solid foods and his rest periods were much longer.
However, Ocean Park rhas eceived criticism for live dolphin performances in the past. Even though they were eventually stopped, some say it is not enough. The park misses An An a lot, and two more pandas, Le Le and Ying Ying, remain at the Ocean Park zoo.
Lastly, as pandas are a national treasure, they have been loaned to other countries as a way to forge political friendships.
