In the last few years, Sydney McLaughlin has risen above all of her 400-meter hurdle competitors and proven herself to be the best of in the word.
Mclaughlin has, again and again, smashed the world record with her incredible speed and hard work. Now her competition isn’t the other runners, it’s only herself.
Last Friday, McLaughlin did it again. She broke the world record for the fourth time in two years finishing her run in 50.68 seconds and winning a world champion title. Femke Bol finished in 52.27 seconds, in second place, and third was Dalilah Muhammad who finished in 53.13 seconds.
Even with her incredible win, McLaughlin still claims she has room to improve. “I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are 10 barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think,” she
said, adding: “I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.”
McLaughlin has been undefeated in 400-meter races since 2019 when she came in second to Muhammad in the world championships. Since then, McLaughlin has become one of track and field’s greatest athletes, especially at the young age of 22.
Before McLaughlin became reigning champion, Muhammad, Olympic and world champion winner, was the best. While she did suffer from a hamstring injury that set back her training and required her to miss a few events, she has recovered and still is one of the best track athletes in the world.
“I was kind of nervous, honestly, going into this meet, not knowing where my fitness level would be,” Muhammad said. “So to get a medal shows my resilience as an athlete.”
In the future, McLaughlin still says she thinks there’s more she needs to do to get better. “My coach thinks there’s a lot more to be done,” she said.
