15 of the biggest Mexican fighters got together at the Zocalo on Saturday to teach the largest boxing class ever.
The instructors – Erick Morales, Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Jackie Nava, Humberto Gonzáles, Miguel Berchelt, Jose Cuevas, Alfonso Zamora, Joke Luis Bueno, Joke Antonio Aguirre, Ganigan Lopez, Adrian Hernandez, Mariana Juarez, Ana Maria Torres, and Alan David Picasso – taught the class organized by the Sports Institute of Mexico City. Afterwards, dozens of people swarmed the teachers to seek autographs and pictures. The class lasted half an hour, with two breaks in between.
The attendees wore shirts with the Mexican flag colors to cover the entire square in green, white, and red. Javier Hidalgo Ponce, the director of the Sports Institute of Mexico City distributed the shirts just a couple of weeks ago to “form the Mexican flag with these beautiful shirts that each and every one of the participants in the massive boxing class will have.”
Hundreds of people gathered in the square and the class began with a tai-chi warm-up, followed by some basic boxing movements and then practice in various combinations.
The class made the Guinness World Record Book for largest boxing class in the world, with 14,299 people. Previously, the record was held by Moscow, Russia, with 3,250 participants in Red Square.
After the attendance figure was certified by Guinness World Records, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum posted a video thanking the “champions who made this great triumph possible.”
Mexico City, with about 9 million residents, currently holds several world records.
