Intense Faceoff: Women’s 2025 World Rugby Cup
The 10th women’s Rugby World Cup is taking place from Friday, August 22nd, and ending on September 27th, in England. This year’s host, England, is the top favorite, but New Zealand, France, and other women’s rugby teams are also determined to secure the trophy for their team and country.
There are four groups of four teams, totaling sixteen playing in the World Cup. Pool A includes England, Australia, United States, Samoa, Pool B’s teams are Canada, Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Pool C has New Zealand, Ireland, Japan, Spain, and Pool D’s players are France, Italy, South Africa, Brazil.
This World Cup, which usually happens every four years, is a popular event for rugby fans. Played on a field with an oval-shaped ball, the goal of this game is to score points by bringing the ball to the other team’s ‘zone.’ They can pass the ball backwards and sideways, and tackling is allowed, but only on the person holding the ball. A game is typically 80 minutes, with two 40 minute halves.
England has won the World Cup twice, most recently in 2014, while New Zealand earned the trophy at the most recent tournament in 2021. Many people are travelling to England to watch this intense faceoff. “It’s an event, as you’ve heard us say before, that we’re incredibly excited about for the sport of rugby. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to really inspire a new set of fans,” Alan Gilpin, the Chief Executive of World Rugby, said. “It’s not just a breakthrough moment for the women’s game. It’s definitely a breakthrough moment for rugby, an opportunity to present a different face of rugby next year.”
“Rugby isn’t just a sport. It’s a statement. At the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, we celebrate strength, confidence and belonging,” Gwen Crabb, a Welsh rugby Union player, promoting strength and confidence. Each win and loss is a chance for the players to learn more and fight for glory, and all the teams are working hard to earn the win for their country.
