Last Saturday at the World Athletics Championships, the U.S. Women’s 4×100 relay team won gold, but the men’s team performed poorly.

The U.S women’s team comprised of Melissa Jefferson, Abby Steiner, Jenna Prandini, and Twanisha Terry finished the 400-meter relay with a time of 41.14, earning themselves the gold medal and the third fastest time ever. This came as a surprise because the Jamaican team easily won last year, however, they couldn’t regain the lead after bad some handoffs.

Terry attributed the win to team chemistry, stating, “You could have the four fastest women, but if you don’t have chemistry and the baton doesn’t move through the exchange zone, then what are you doing?”

However, the men’s relay didn’t play out as well for the US men. The team was comprised of Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Elijah Hall, and Marvin Bracy. The team has been notorious for butchering handoffs, and they did it again in the final. All of them struggled to pass the baton, costing them first place and leaving them with a silver medal.

“It’s bittersweet,” Bracy said. “When you sweep the 100 and the 200, you expect to come out here and perform better.”
