Many trends are started by the youth of the world. The trends often confuse and perplex the previous generation. Lately, teens in suits have been showing up to see the new Minions movie.
Since the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru, swarms of mostly teenaged boys have shown up at movie theaters wearing their best clothes to view Minions. They show up in suits, dress shirts, and even sunglasses, and seem to be creating a persona that is “part businessman, part Secret Service, with a dash of self-awareness,” according to an article titled “Teens are dressing in suits to see ‘Minions’ as meme culture and boredom collide.”
This new trend is called
#gentleminions
, and well-dressed Minions fans have gained more than 65 million views on TikTok alone. One video received almost 170,000 likes, and more than a million views, and it is a video showing twenty sharply-dressed teens going up an elevator, and then making the request, “22 tickets for Minions: Rise of Gru, please.”
However, some followers of this trend are being the opposite of gentle, creating “mosh pits” in movie theaters, and generally being disruptive. Movie theaters have begun to ban suits inside their theaters, and they often warn teenagers not to disturb the other viewers. The choice to ban suits resulted in innovations such as wearing disguises and smuggling in suits and later putting them on in the theater. Jennifer Grygiel is an associate professor of communications at Syracuse University, and she says that once the trend was popular, more and more people were prompted to join in through what she calls the “participatory nature of social media.” This particular trend is especially popular because it is relatively easy to show up at a movie theater with your friends in nice clothes.
