January 6th was the day former President Donald Trump rallied his fans and supporters and told them that the election had been a fraud.
But why didn’t the FBI or another police agency stop the riot? If they had just popped onto social media, they would see threats such as “Occupy the capital” or “Bring revolution to Washington.”
According to counterterrorism chief Jill Sanborn, the First Amendment says that there is free speech, meaning that the FBI is not allowed to monitor messages without a tip or an investigation that leads to a specific post. But is this true? In some court records, agents have said they monitor public social media, and the agency recently signed a $14 million contract with a company called ZeroFox to identify threats to the US.
In my opinion, the FBI should learn from this and make their responses to danger quicker and more effective, so another January 6th can be avoided. One way they could do that is to monitor the President’s messages so if the president is planning to do another January 6th the FBI could just look at his messages and put a stop to it.
