There is a heat wave spreading across England and Wales. Schools are trying to keep children cool by using different methods. Some schools have already closed because of the heat soaring up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit in England and 98.78 degrees Fahrenheit in Wales!

Teachers have remembered to check the weather each day and cancel some activities that could cause children to burn a lot of energy.

Hartford Manor Primary School and Nursery in Cheshire changed from hot food to cool food to help children cool down and not sweat that much during the day. Some other schools bought food from an ice cream van that passed by and handed out free frozen goodies, like ice lollies. King Charles, a primary school in Worcestershire that teaches cooking, even stopped oven use in their classes to keep their students cool!

Some schools have prevented children from running or doing sports outside. Students wore their PE kits instead of their uniforms, which are made of lighter clothing. Some sports lessons had been canceled and children were made to sit in the shade. The Department of Health and Social Care recommended children not do activities that require a lot of running or any kind of activity that allows them to get very sweaty or overheated on hot days.

Clapton Girls’ Academy let their students go home early. Bedale High School has closed already.

Schools in West Yorkshire sometimes sent their students to different places to keep cool while learning. Some students went to a church near their school and stayed there all morning.

The UK government recommended that children should put on sunscreen, be in the shade as much as possible, and drink plenty of water to stay cool.
