What is a Sport?
Sports are generally exercises in which you feel tired after or actively participating in. According to Oxford English Dictionary, a sport is “An activity involving physical exertion and skill, especially (particularly in modern use) one regulated by set rules or customs in which an individual or team competes against another or others.” Essentially, cheer, gymnastics and dance are all sports because they fit the minimal requirement. They all include actively participating in something solo or as part of a team.
In cheer, there are two types of teams: sideline cheer(cheering for a team) and competitive/all-star cheer (In competitions, flips, jumps, stunts). There are multiple elements such as tumbling, flipping, stunts, and lifts. In gymnastics, there are three types: artistic, rhythmic and trampoline. Unlike the other two sports (except for breakdancing), artistic gymnastics is in the Olympics, so it is recognized as a sport worldwide. Also, more people know about it and acknowledge it as a sport because it is so popular on TV and the news. It requires a lot of tumbling, strength, flexibility and precision. You are scored based on difficulty and how it was executed. In dance, there are so many styles and there are more people inventing new ones every day! Some main ones are ballet, where it is all about control and balance, and lyrical, where the moves correspond to the music. There are solos, duos, trios, small groups, large groups and lines. Unlike cheer and gymnastics, dance can be a one-person sport or a team sport.
So, if dance, cheer and gymnastics all fit the requirement, isn’t cheese rolling and eating competitions also valid to be a sport? Both are skills needed to master, with set rules and both are competitive. With the right arguments, anything where you move can be considered a sport. Next time, when you doubt if something is a sport or not, think about the definition and answer again. If you think about it, sports can be anything.
