The start

At the very start of the game, there are two twins, a male (Aether) and a female (Lumine). They are travelers, traveling from world to world. In order to travel, they must go to Celestia and walk until a door appears, which leads to another world. During their travels, an Unknown god, claiming to be the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles, blocks their path. She says, “Outlanders, your journey ends here. The arrogation of mankind ends now!”

We don’t know where the twins were born yet, but my guess is that they were born in the Heavens. This shows why they were able to fight the Unknown God, rather than running away.

In the end, you must choose a twin, and the unchosen twin is engulfed by the Unknown God’s power (cubes). Right after that, the chosen twin is also engulfed in the cubes, and the screen turns dark. After some dialogue, you see a drawing on sand, and it turns out the drawing was made by the chosen twin. Next to the chosen twin is a floating being, like a child. She is called Paimon. The chosen twin, or traveler, as everyone else in the game calls them, reveals that she doesn’t know how many years have passed since the incident with the Unknown god. She also reveals that she fished Paimon from a lake two months ago. This makes Paimon really grateful for “saving her life.” She vows to be the travelers’ “great travel guide.”

But how does Paimon know everything about Teyvat (the contenient Genshin is set on), while no one knows who she is?

The Power of the Stars

I think Paimon is the god/archon of stars. After all, there are seven archons, each representing a different element. Paimon’s character design has so many hints of stars in it! She can disappear and reappear, and when she reappears constellations surround her.

The only theorized element is the light element, which I think holds the power of the stars. What I theorize is, the power of the stars is bestowed by the Heavens, and therefore no vision is needed. A vision is a small charm that holds the power of the element bestowed upon you by the archons.

I think that, because the twins were born in the Heavens, they had the power of Light before the Unknown god took it away. But, because they were born in the Heavens, they can obtain the different elements without a vision. This is shown when they come into contact with Archon statues, and they have the choice to change elements.

What happened to the other Twin?

I think that the other twin was transported back in time, becoming the abyss Prince/Princess, which is shown after defeating the Abyss Herald. The Abyss is home to the remaining people of Khaenri’ah who got turned into monsters of the Abyss order, including the Abyss Herald. The nation of Khaenri’ah was demolished by the seven archons. That war is called the Archon war. The archons brutally murdered smaller deities, and Khaenri’ah turned into chaos.

There is a scene where the other twin is shown sitting on the edge of a cliff, watching over Khaenri’ah. There is another peculiar thing accompanying Khaenri’ah: cubes, the Unkown god’s cubes, to be exact. I don’t have an idea about why the cubes are there, but I think it has to do with Khaenri’ah not having a god.
