Trumpet, a dog from Illinois, is the first-ever bloodhound to win the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show(WKC) on Wednesday night. Trumpet competed against a tough crowd of nearly 3,500 other dogs that included a Samoyed, a Maltese, and a German Shepherd.

This show is amongst the oldest continuous events, coming in second only to the Kentucky Derby.

The 4-year-old bloodhound is owned by Chris and Bryan Flessner, Heather Buehner, and Tina Kocar, according to the WKC.

Bloodhounds are revered for their determination and hunting power and are one of the oldest breeds of dogs that hunt by scent, meaning that a discovery made by a trained bloodhound holds significant weight in court.

Second place in the Westminster, also known as Best in Show Reserve, was awarded to one French Bulldog by the name of Winston. One of Winston’s owners is NFL defensive lineman Morgan Fox.

Trumpet was largely considered as an underdog due to his slow and clumsy gait combined with his wrinkled and droopy face. The audience’s attention was largely attracted to the more charismatic and flamboyant dogs.

The show took place at the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York, instead of its original home in New York City’s Madison Square Garden for the second time due to Covid-19 concerns.
