Two billion years ago, volcanos erupted all around the Moon, and because of that, there may be a large supply of water there that we can use for our benefit.
The water on the moon can be consumed and be used as rocket fuel in the future. However, if all the water on the moon has sulfur in it, it will probably not be good or safe if you do drink it. “That’s a pretty critical thing to know if you plan on bringing a straw with you to the moon,” says Margaret Landis.
Scientists guess there is so much ice on the moon because they get captured in something known as a cold trap. Cold traps are at such a low temperature that they can keep ice frozen for billions of years! Margaret Landis says, “There are some places at the lunar poles that are as cold as Pluto,”
Since it was confirmed that there was ice in the moon in 2009, many started studying and researching how ice formed or got on the moon. Many thought it was because of asteroids, or comets. Others thought the ice was formed from charged atoms and solar wind.
One particular researcher, Andrew Wilcoski, thinks the ice on the moon came from ancient volcanos that used to exist billions of years ago.
Everyone thinks something different about this topic, but the ice on the moon could change history, by supplying us with an amount of water that could last a long time.
