Wars in Gaza and Ukraine Cause Trouble for the UN
The UN has been trying to bring peace to the countries, but the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war are causing lots of trouble.
The 80th UN meeting is being held in New York, but the wars in Gaza and Ukraine are making the UN’s job very hard. In addition, the UN can only take action if it’s unanimous, which does not happen very often, usually because of powerful countries such as the US and Russia.
Israel’s war in Gaza started in October 2023. Right now, it is still very dangerous. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, and Israel is planning attacks on the few places in Gaza that have not been attacked yet. This has led to more and more countries starting to count Palestine as a country. However, it is still unlikely that Palestine will become an official country anytime soon. The Prime Minister of Israel is against recognizing Palestine because he is afraid that by doing so, it would be considered as a reward for Hamas’ attack on Israel in 2023.
The war on Ukraine, which started in 2022, is still going on and hasn’t show any signs that Russia will back down. Donald Trump has tried and failed to convince the president of Russia to join peace talks. The attacks have even increased. Russia has actually started using drones, fighter jets, and spy planes. Russia has been warned that NATO will be defending its airspace.
