On Tuesday, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, started erupting, producing a volcanic ash cloud that was nearly seven miles into the air.
Residents of nearby villages have been evacuated for safety, and flights to Bali, a popular tourist site, have been canceled. Authorities have raised regional alerts to the highest levelurging both residents and tourists to avoid the area surrounding the volcano.
The volcano has erupted a lot recently, and the latest eruption before this was in May. This latest volcanic eruption sent ash more than 11 km high. Last November, a series of eruptions took the lives of nine people and forced thousands of people from the area. Ash and dust covered the roads and roofs of local neighborhoods, and the people in nearby villages were moved to safety.
Authorities have raised the volcano’s alert level to the highest, and suggesting continued volcanic activity.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is a twin-peaked volcano that towers at 1,584 meters on the tourist island of Flores. The name Laki-laki means “man” in Indonesian, and its twin, Mount Perempuan, which means “woman” and is more than 1,703 meters high.
