Indonesian Volcano Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again
On Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, a Volcano in Indonesia, erupted. Mount Lewotobi has two volcano peaks, Laki-laki and Perempuan. Mount Perempuan is rarely active, while Laki-laki is very active. Laki-laki erupted because of volcanic earthquakes and rising magma. The eruption blasted a ton of ash more than 11 kilometers into the sky. All the ash in the air caused many flights to be canceled or delayed.
Volcanoes erupt when magma underneath Earth’s surface moves around. Because magma is less dense than the surrounding rocks, the magma rises which causes an eruption. Earthquakes can also cause volcanoes to erupt. Tectonic plates are slabs of rock that make up Earth, and when they shift, they cause earthquakes. In the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption, tectonic plates shifted, causing the magma to move around and rise, ultimately causing an eruption.
Mount Laki-laki has already erupted 3 times this year making it pretty active, and it has also been rumbling recently. Rumbling sounds made by the volcanoes are caused by small earthquakes deep down. Usually, Mount Laki-laki rumbles 10 times a day, but in this eruption, the volcano rumbled 50 times in the course of two hours.
When Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted, it sent ash more than 11 kilometers ( 6.8 miles ) into the sky. The cloud of ash could be seen from more than 100 miles away. The ash in the air has caused many plane flights from Bali and Flores to be delayed or even canceled. Because of the eruption, many tourists have been stuck in Bali or Flores due to flights being canceled or delayed.
The eruption of Mount Laki-laki has caused and villages close by. As of now, Mount spewing tons of ash into the air.
