James Caan is a movie tough guy. According to his family, he died on Wednesday at age 82. Caan’s work spanned generations in big-screen classics as playing roles in The Godfather, Misery, and Elf.

A family posted a message on Twitter saying that “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Caan will most likely be remembered for his amazing role in The Godfather as Sonny Corleone, one of the hot-headed oldest sons of the mob boss, Vito Corleone, played by the person Marlon Brando. He was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for that role.

Before his Godfather fame, Caan received an Emmy nomination because of his breakout work in the 1971 movie called Brian’s Song. When he played the role of a landscaper who moonlights as a criminal ringleader in the movie called Bottle Rocket, he earned indie cinema cred. He also played in 88 episodes out of the total 108 episodes in the NBC hit Las Vegas.

Matt DelPiano, Caan’s manager, thought Caan was more like a friend rather than a client. DelPiano said in a clear statement that “Jimmy was one of the greatest. Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, but he was also funny, loyal, caring, and beloved. Our relationship was always friendship before business. I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former California Governor, said that “James Caan was an icon — a legend. He inspired everyone who has ever been in front of a camera. I was lucky to work with him and see his talent and his fantastic sense of humor firsthand. He was a great training partner in the gym and a true friend, and I’ll miss him.”
