Getting into a competitive college is not an easy task. Some parents are willing to do anything to help their child, even if it requires hundreds of thousands of dollars and a little side door.

The ringleader of the college admissions scandal, William Singer, was a private college counselor who gained $25 million from 2011-2018 by parents to get their children into elite colleges. He would offer ways for wealthy families and their kids a way in, one being the use of athletic recruiters, like Gordon Ernst.

Gordon Ernst, a former Georgetown University tennis coach has been sentenced to over 2 years in prison after pleading guilty last fall to taking bribes to get prospective students in. He had accumulated over $3.5 million dollars in bribes after selling almost 2 dozen admission slots to the University. In the years 2012-2018, Ernst took enough bribes to get 12 students in, some of which did not even play a sport competitively, admitted as recruited athletes for the Georgetown Tennis Team.

Following, “Mr. Ernst pleaded guilty to conspiracy, bribery, and filing a false tax return” according to the Department of Justice where he tried to hide the bribe payments in his federal income tax returns.

According to New York Times author, Ava Sasani, the sentencing of “30 months represented the harshest punishment issued so far in the federal investigation known as Operation Varsity Blues,” an investigation specializing in the payment of bribes for elite college admissions by parents. Ernst was not the only person who abused his power as “more than 50 people have been charged in connection with the scandal.”

This College Admission Scandal is mostly complete and has done good, shining light on the admissions system that favors wealthier students. The leader of this scandal at large, Mr. Singer, is one of the last defendants in the Scandal who has not been sentenced yet. But Mr. Ernst on the other hand has seen the worst consequence so far for his actions in this massive, Operation Varsity Blues investigation.
