A picture that Van Gogh painted in 1885 was discovered on July 14, 2022.
When Vincent withVan Gogh didn’t have much money, he made paintings on both sides of the canvas. Van Gogh also painted over some of his own paintings.
One of the paintings Van Gogh made was “A Head of a Pleasant Woman”. Using X-ray technology, curators noticed that it had actually been painted over another self-portrait of his. It is unknown if they can uncover the self portrait, but that doesn’t mean it cannot be seen.
“Moments like this are extremely rare,” says Frances Fowle, a caretaker of French art. “We
have discovered an unknown work by Vincent van Gogh, one of the most important and popular artists in the world.”
“When we saw the X-ray for the first time of course we were hugely excited. Such a major
discovery happens once, twice in a conservator’s lifetime,” senior paintings conservator Lesley Stevenson said in a video released by the museum.
“To have an image as elusive as it presently is something very, very special.”
