Last Thursday, the US Supreme Court made a shocking decision to expand gun rights in the middle of a fierce nationwide debate. They struck down a New York law restricting gun-carrying rights, similar to regulations in states like California and New Jersey, which is expected to allow more people to carry guns out in public, legally. Apparently, the court found the New York law for gun carrying for a “proper cause” violated the US Constitution.

In May of 2022, the rise of gun violence and gun control was highly debated, especially with high-profile shootings at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and a grocery store in Buffalo, New York.

President Joe Biden stated that he was “deeply disappointed” by the Supreme Court’s actions, which he also added “contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should trouble us all.”

New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, said he would go over other ways to restrict gun access, doing so by further securing the application process for buying firearms and looking at bans for certain locations. In addition, Adams stated, “We cannot allow New York to become the wild, wild west.”

“Since the start of this year alone, there have already been 277 reported mass shootings – an average of more than one per day,” said Justice Breyer.

More than 390 million guns are owned by civilians in the US. Not to mention, just in 2020 alone, more than 45,000 Americans died of gun related injuries including shootings and suicides. Even though greatly acknowledging the deviation in Uvalde and Buffalo, the six-justice conservatie stood on the side of “keep and bear arms.”

As these precedents load up, it would be noticeably more difficult for future Supreme Court justices to change course and interpret the Constitution as permitting extensive gun restrictions.
