In a crucial ruling last week, the US Supreme Court struck down a New York law that would have reduced gun carrying rights. This decision has sparked nationwide debate since it now contrasts similar restricting firearm laws in other states as well.

This ruling changes the gun laws, which directly impact American citizens. When gun restrictions are challenged, more people can easily obtain and utilize a firearm. The Supreme Court ruled that a law requiring citizens to give a proper cause to be armed in public was unconstitutional. This means that anyone can obtain a gun and have it in their possession in public.

Representing the six conservative judges and the court’s decision, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that Americans have a right to carry “commonly used” weapons in public for personal defense reasons. Even after the tragic events of the Uvalde shooting last month, these judges stand by the second amendment that allows citizens to “keep and bear arms.”

On the other hand, three liberal judges disagreed with the court’s ruling. Justice Breyer voiced his concern about the court’s ruling, stating that, “[s]ince the start of this year alone, there have already been 277 reported mass shootings – an average of more than one per day.”

Another major figure who is opposed to this ruling is President Joe Biden who feels “deeply disappointed” by the ruling that “contradicts both common sense and the Constitution and should trouble us all”.

This ruling is paving the way for more legal changes. If a gun restriction law was struck down in New York, it will most likely occur again in states with similar laws including Maryland, California, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Massachusetts.

However, New York City Mayor Eric Adams refused to give up on reducing firearms. Currently, he is looking at ways to restrict purchasing weapons and bans in certain locations. In his words, “We cannot allow New York to become the wild, wild west,” and it is impertinent that guns be controlled in America.
