US and Israel at War with Iran
This recent attack was encouraged by Israel and Saudi Arabia. Israel attacked first, launching the first attack on Saturday. The goal was to take out Iran’s highest leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which they succeeded in. US President Donald Trump describes this attack as a “major combat operation.”
US President Donald Trump has stated many reasons for this attack, which include preventing Iran from developing and making nuclear weapons. Mr. Trump states he wants Iran’s people to take control of the government. This attack has caused many fatalities in Iran. Iran states that a reported US strike hit a girls’ elementary school, killing at least one hundred seventy-five students. These attacks quickly escalated into a regional war, with Iran’s retaliatory attack causing many different injuries and damage, resulting in the deaths of 8 US service soldiers. In total, over 1,800 people have died.
The war has continued, with the US and Israel attacking Iran for a second day on Sunday. The US Congress itself is bothered by Mr. Trump’s choice of taking action without approval, as the war was one he initiated, and not one necessary to protect the US. Many demand hearings from Mr. Trump and an explanation for this attack. “We’ve had no oversight whatsoever over what the executive is doing as we’re spending a billion dollars a day, and we have failed to have any real substantive debate or discussion,” states Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. Many experts also believe the actions of the US and Israel are illegal under international law and US law.
The war has just started, and Mr. Trump claims that it could go on for a month or more. He suggests that Iran’s soldiers surrender and that Iran’s people should take control over the government. It’s not certain who will control Iran once the war and fighting are over. The US Congress is expected to discuss the war and Mr. Trump’s actions in the future.
