Russia claims that, throughout July, Ukraine has been sending drones to attack its capital city, Moscow. The latest drone attack was reported last week, and while one drone was shot down, the remaining two hit commercial buildings.

Along with the drone attacks, Ukraine was also accused of attacking military air bases, oil facilities, and Russian-occupied parts of Crimea. Russia has been in conflict with Ukraine for about nine years, but the two of them only started attacking each other seventeen months ago.

Ukraine hasn’t usually taken credit for attacks on Russia, in order to maintain the element of surprise. This time, though, Ukrainian officials confirmed that the attacks were indeed carried out by Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, didn’t specifically mention the attacks, but said that “Gradually, the war is returning to the territory of Russia.”

“This is an inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process,” he added. The promised retaliation follows weeks of relentless bombardment by Russia.

Both sides feel differently about the state of the war. Recently, Ukraine happily greeted the reclaiming of a small town. Zelensky announced the good news himself. Meanwhile, Russia has begun a spending rush, earning support for the economy and war, though some worry that overspending could create risks for the country’s financial stability.

Of course, there is also the drone situation in Moscow. Though the attacks have grown more frequent, they have always been much less intense than Russia’s nightly drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, which sometimes impact civilian areas.

The first assaults were sent in early May, to the Kremlin compound in Moscow, followed by attacks on an exclusive neighborhood in late May. American officials reported that this was likely arranged by one of Kyiv’s military or intelligence units. The three recent attacks struck military facilities in Moscow.

These attacks completely flipped the belief that the people in Moscow, being 500 miles from Ukraine, should be 500 miles away from the danger of war. This has fueled criticism of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s handling of the war, which has taken a toll on the economy and cost the lives of thousands of soldiers.

Last Sunday, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that they intercepted 25 drones and two missiles from Ukraine, while another missile injured nine people in Taganrog. Ukraine’s Air Force said that they intercepted four drones, but that on Saturday, a Russian missile hit a building and killed two people in Sumy.
