Imagine a pumpkin so huge it weighs more than a small car and has a circumference of over 21 feet. That’s exactly the kind of pumpkin that twin brothers Ian and Stuart Paton from the UK presented to Guinness World Records this October.

These 64 year old siblings have been growing pumpkins for over 50 years now, and they finally accomplished the Guinness World Record for the heaviest pumpkin ever. The pumpkin, named Muggle (inspired by the Harry Potter series), turned out to weigh a massive 2819 pounds and 4 ounces. Not only did Muggle beat the old world record by around 70 pounds, but it also set a new record for having the largest circumference at 21 feet and 3.8 inches.

Growing giant pumpkins isn’t easy, especially in the UK. The weather can be unpredictable and not always pleasant like warmer places where most records come from. The Paton brothers experimented and perfected their techniques over many years, using a greenhouse to protect their plants from rain and cold. Ian explained that they adjust their strategy every season, adding new improvements.

Back in 2022, they set the British record with a 2656 pound pumpkin giant, but they continued to work for the global title. Competitive pumpkin growing is considered a sport by many people. Ian calls it “the friendliest sport in the world.” Even the previous world record holder, Travis Gienger from Minnesota USA, who grew a 2749 pound pumpkin in 2023 sent congratulations to the brothers.

The record breaking weigh off occurred at the Malvern Autumn Show in Worcestershire on October 12, 2024. The seed originated from the Paton brothers’ own saved stock of the breed Atlantic Giant. Muggle was planted late in April inside their 1,200 square foot heated tunnel in Lymington, Hampshire. The vine received daily care including 150-200 gallons of water, fertilizer, and constant watch for pests and disease. This achievement is the first world record for a UK grown pumpkin since 2010 and the heaviest pumpkin ever grown in the entire world.

The Paton brothers’ story is inspiring. After decades of effort, they’ve proven that teamwork can lead to great achievements. While Stuart plans to retire from pumpkin growing, Ian is preparing for the next season. The Paton brothers achievement shows that dedication and consistency can create exceptional results, even in tough climates.
