Typhoon Ragasa, also known as the Super Typhoon Nando in the Philippines, was a gigantic and critical disaster that hit parts of Asia recently.
At 5:00 pm on September 24, the Ragasa made landfall in the city of Yangjiang, located in the Guangdong province of China, then hit the western part of Guangdong, Guangxi on September 25, a day after. This tropical disaster also affected parts of Vietnam, Philippines, Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other coastal areas in Asia. More than 47 people were killed, 219 were injured, and 6 were missing in total.
Taiwan experienced the most significant damage and mortality after the typhoon. The overflow of a lake in Hualien County flooded the town of Guangfu, roads, and houses with sludge and water.
In Guangdong, over 2 million people were evacuated in advance, before the disaster could strike. This action of the Chinese government greatly reduced the risk of injury or death.
According to the BBC, 42-year-old disaster victim Awa, owner of a local bookshop, describes the incident. “I’m still in shock. I just can’t imagine how this could have happened. This is one of the busiest areas in Hualien, and the streets are lined with shops. We go to these places all the time, but everything was destroyed yesterday,”.
