In Tarrytown, New York, Trumpet, a magnificent bloodhound from Illinois won Best in Show at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Wednesday night. The crowd of competitors included a Samoyed, a Maltese, and a German shepherd.

Standing in front of the huge silver cup and ribbons for the champion’s post-victory glamour shot, Trumpet didn’t talk much. Trumpet is the first bloodhound to win Westminster.

“I was shocked,” said Heather Buehner, Trumpet’s handler. “There were seven beautiful dogs in that ring. You know, I feel like sometimes a bloodhound might be a little big of an underdog. So I was absolutely thrilled.” She spoke. Shockingly, it was Trumpet’s first dog show in January.

Second place, or Best in Show Reserve, was awarded to a French bulldog named Winston.

Traditionally, the show held in the winter was at Madison Square Garden. But because of the pandemic, it was moved to Lyndhurst, a country estate, for the 2nd year in a row. Lyndhurst is beside the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, This house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

Preliminary rounds were held in outdoor rings and the Best in Show rounds were staged in a large tent filled with an excited group of dog lovers.

Around 25 miles south, in Midtown, the Empire State Building lit up purple in recognition of the dog show.

The largest group of cheers were reserved for Striker, a white Samoyed who was one of the seven group winners. Striker reached the finals last year as well but lost to a Pekingese named Wasabi.

Trumpet’s great grandfather, Tigger, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, held the record for the dog with the longest ears. Tigger’s left ear was 13.5 inches, and his right ear was 13.75 inches long.
