On June 18th, Trumpet, a bloodhound, narrowly won the Westminster Dog Show in New York. This marks the first time a bloodhound has ever won Best in Show at Westminster Dog Show.

In addition to being the first bloodhound, Trumpet is also the 7th hound to win at Westminster. The other six are Shirkhan of Grandeur, Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth, Kabiks The Challenger, K-Run’s Park Me In First, Foxcliffe Hickory Wind, and Tashtins Lookin For Trouble. All of which are different in size, shape, and color.

In the past, the judges have never had a penchant for any breed. In Westminster’s near 150 dog shows, the wire fox terrier has won the most shows at a mere 12.

Anything was possible, however Heather Buehner, Trumpet’s handler, still said “I was shocked” when Trumpet won. Bill McFadden, the handler of 2018’s winner, said something akin to what Buehner said in “[i]t feels a little unreal.”

The unforeseen and monumental occasion was not the only abnormality from the competition this year. For a second year in a row, the competition was held in Lyndhurst instead of the traditional Madison Square Garden. This was done as a response to the pandemic. The Best in Show rounds were held in large tents with only a small, enthusiastic group of dog fans.

Despite all the differences from past year, many traditions were still upheld. “New York, New York” was playing at the end of the evening and the Empire State Building lit up purple.

The Westminster Dog Show always contains twists and turns. 2018’s dog show found four of the seven top dogs to be of breeds that have never won. These constant surprises make the Westminster Dog Show a great watch for any dog fanatic.
