In a large tent in Lyndhurst, an enthusiastic crowd looks on as the Best in Show rounds of the Westminster Show are held. The sound of Frank Sinatra singing “New York, New York” fills the background, and the Empire State Building glows purple to celebrate show.

The Westminster Dog Show is an annual event held by the American Kennel Club that allows dogs of all breeds to compete in various contests, including agility and obedience. The “Best in Show” title is awarded to the dog chosen as the overall winner of the dog show, and this year, Trumpet was the one to take home that title.

Trumpet is the first of his breed to win this prestigious competition. Representing bloodhounds, he showed off his long, floppy ears, droopy jowls, and cute, wrinkled face. He was up against a tough crowd of many impressive dogs of other breeds, including a Samoyed, Maltese, and German shepherd, who all seemed to be the possible winner with their large cheers from the crowd. Best in Show Reserve, or second place, was awarded to Winston, a French bulldog.

An underdog, Trumpet only started competing in dog shows in January of this year. ““I was shocked… I feel like sometimes a bloodhound might be a little bit of an underdog. So I was absolutely thrilled,” Heather Buehner, Trumpet’s owner, exclaimed. Winning runs in the family, however, as his great-grandfather, Tigger, held the Guinness World Record for the dog with the longest ears. With victory in his blood and his good looks going for him, Trumpet managed to beat the other six charismatic dogs and go home as the champion.
