Recently, Trump has chosen to support the LIV Golf tour instead of the well-established PGA Tour since he claims that LIV Golf offers more than PGA Tour.
LIV Golf is funded by the sovereign wealth fund operated by Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi’s Crown Prince. Trump says that “what they are doing for the players is so great. The salaries are going to go way up,” as well as “[t]he PGA was not loved by a lot of the players, as you know, for a long time. Ending with by saying that LIV Golf’s “prize money was going to be much higher, you know, four, five, six times higher. So, instead of a million dollars you win five or seven or eight. A lot of money and it’s even going up.”
Civilians have been outraged by this support since American intelligence officials believe that Mohammed organized the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi, and because it is believed that the Saudi government assisted with the organization of 9/11. The group 9/11 Justice staged protests and even sent a letter to Trump containing arguments such as, “[w]ho blew up the World Trade Center? It wasn’t the Iraqis. It was Saudi. Take a look at Saudi Arabia.”
The PGA Tour has taken a similar stance as most civilians. Golfers participating in LIV Golf have been banned or suspended from the PGA Tour. Resulting in only four other major tournaments they can participate in.
Despite this, Trump continues to support LIV Golf. While he criticized Saudis in 2016, he still rejects the claims of Mohammed’s part in Jamal’s assassination. He also stated that “nobody’s gotten to the bottom of 9/11.” He has gone so far as to allow them to use his golf course in Bedminster. Faced with firm opposition, Trump’s belief or stubbornness has heated many. However, only time will reveal whether he funded the next big hit or the next terrorist attack.
