Many cities in the Northeast and around the United States have seen daily record-high triple-digit temperatures overtaking their old temperature highs. Temperatures in Newark reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit at 3 p.m., a new record exceeding the old one from July 24 of 99 degrees Fahrenheit daily in 2010, according to the National Weather Service. It was the fifth consecutive day of temperatures above 100 degrees.
In Boston, the temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit, exceeding the previous record of 88 degrees set back in 1933. Even though New York City has not exceeded its record temperature of 97 degrees, forecasters have predicted that pretty soon New York would exceed the temperature and have a new record to beat. The heat from New York was too much for one unfortunate person, who died from heat-related injuries.
Other cities that beat their daily records included Providence, which had a high of 97 degrees, beating its previous high for the day of 94 degrees, set back in 1987, and Reading, which registered a temperature of 97 degrees, according to the Weather Service.
“Temperatures on Monday are expected to be nearly as high as they were on Sunday, but the heat should moderate in the Northeast and other parts of the country,” Richard Bann, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said.
The heat got so bad that several major metros throughout the Northeast have put excessive heat measures into effect in an attempt to keep residents cool. Philadelphia extended its heat health emergency declaration through Sunday, sending workers to check on those who are unhoused and other vulnerable residents.
Those attempts were not wasted as many residents were less affected by the heat.
