Athleticism and charisma are two weapons that Tom Cruise maneuvered on the big screen. The immaculate combination of those weapons makes recent movie “Top Gun-Maverick” a great hit.

Does the perfect combination of athleticism and charisma make Tom Cruise a superstar?

Not exactly.

In his early successful action movie career (1980’s-1990’s), he had created a few screen figures who are closely relatable to ordinary people. The figures in “Risky Business”, “Cocktail”, and “Jerry Maguire” are firmly implanted in generations of audiences’ memories. Around the millennium time, he started to show his capability of doing subtle creative performances in more challenging but less accessible films, like “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Magnolia.”

Since 2000, Tom Cruise has focused on the action-adventure genre, perfecting his God-given charisma and impressive athleticism in “Maverick”, “Mission: Impossible” sequels, and “Edge of Tomorrow”. He did not forget to add a touch of his exquisite charm to those roles either.

What’s marvelous about Tom Cruise is how he maintains a high level of quality control for his movies. His utmost devotion to the movies and extreme obsessiveness to reality delivered results far beyond expectation.

Not surprisingly, the recent “Top Gun: Maverick” became one of the best action films in many years. And “Mission: Impossible” sequels are getting better. The stunning success is largely owed to Cruise, who, in the best interest of our entertainment, fearlessly climbed the world’s tallest building and gallantly plunged out of an airplane.

Cruise stays in the big screen time and he strives his best to preserve the traditional theater experience, as we are living in the unavoidable digital time full of endless streaming and iPhone movie/video watching. He unapologetically refused to make movies for Netflix or Amazon Prime Video and even killed the possibility of a V.O.D. premiere for “Maverick” earlier in the pandemic. Cruise’s adamant effort supporting big screen means quite a lot for those who worry about the cinema future.
