Tom Cruise is an acting legend. He has performed in several movies, delivering a seemingly perfect performance every time. But what makes him successful? What drives him? What makes him Tom Cruise?

In Tom Cruise’s early career, he took on roles as down-to-earth characters. Roles that everyone could relate to, people that the audience could always root for. The notability made Tom Cruise a likable character in the industry.

Eventually, he shifted to movies in the genre of drama and romance. He proved he could play more nuanced characters in the films “Magnolia” and “Eyes Wide Shut”.

Recently, he has played more charismatic and athletic characters, most notably with his role in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. The various characters he’s portrayed prove his adaptability. He can play almost anyone at any time.

One of his most defining traits however, is his need for quality, his need for genuine acting and practical effects. Cruise does not settle for the easy path. Instead, he wants things to be as realistic as possible.

According to an article written in the New York Times, Calum Marsh, a journalist stated “You will not see Cruise phoning in a performance. You get the sense that he treats every movie he does these days as if it were the most important one he has ever done.

In “Top Gun: Maverick”, a movie following navy pilots taking on a suicide mission, he demanded that there would be little to no use of CGI. He forced himself to go into flight training, taking on multiple Gs, just to get an authentic experience for the audience.

Onscreen, Tom Cruise is the epitome of a perfect actor. His most recent movie, “Top Gun: Maverick” passed the 1-billion-dollar mark, making it one of his biggest hits.

Offscreen however, he is completely different. An enigmatic personality that can’t even act like a normal person.

Cruise never takes acting lightly, always making sure one performance is the same, if not better, quality as the other. He has extreme devotion, constantly tweaking little details just to get a small improvement in his performance.

“Cruise has all of the qualities you want in a movie star and none of the qualities you expect of a human being,” stated Marsh.
