Influencer Remi Bader was involved in a horrible fat-shaming incident at Deep Hollow Ranch. Although they first did not let her ride a horse stating that she was overweight, their manner of handling the situation soon became discriminatory and offensive. A worker there later posted a harsh video on Tik Tok that included a comment, “when you’re not a fat b—-, you can ride at Deep Hollow Ranch.” She was also laughed at by the workers when she was there.
This experience shared by the public figure is just a tiny part of what society does to people considered fat. Unfortunately, society’s fat-shaming doesn’t do any good to the victim physically and mentally. With excuses of trying to help and motivate people to lose weight, people discriminate based on weight, but it is not their job to do so. Frankly, it will only cause mental harm to them, giving them depression, low self-esteem, and even eating disorders. This happens to over 40% of Americans today.
In recent years, society has greatly increased the amount of fat-shaming and weight discrimination against others. Google trends have shown that fat-shaming online has become extremely popular and peaked in 2013. A study shows a result that 94% of teenage girls report that they have been discriminated against because of their weight
Bader understood that not letting her ride the horses wasn’t discriminating against her because it is true that the horses can only bear a certain amount of weight. But the blatant discrimination she faced from the workers there was unacceptable. She said she wanted to share the incident because of “the way I was spoken [to] and laughed at … and the way I was treated overall.” The employee posting the video also “made very clear that they did not want me there because of my weight, and that’s very disappointing,” Bader commented.
Many studies have proven that weight-related discrimination is shown to trigger people to participate in less physical activities, leading to further weight gain. For example, a study by some Swiss and German researchers found that one of the main reasons why obese people exercise less is because of a fear of fat-shaming and other discrimination. They interviewed a total of 30 obese adults.
Fat-shaming only leads people to develop more severe eating and physical activity habits. Bader was subject to its effects and shared that she had a condition involving severe disordered eating. Being subject to fat-shaming behavior can damage people for the rest of their lives.
