A 37-match winning streak, it’s known in six countries and three continents. The streak lived for 132 days, or an eon in tennis time. Iga Swiatek, ranked number one in women tennis, is disappointed in her performance at Wimbledon because her streak had died. Just like all streaks do. So did Coco Guaff, ranked eleven. Both French women’s finalists lost in the third round, their towering streaks ending quickly and in a fizzle.
Swiatek’s streak was broken by 32-year-old Alizé Cornet, a French tennis player. Cornet herself is a marvel because of her 62nd consecutive Grand Slam main draw. In addition, Cornet was the one who beat Serena Williams in the third round of Wimbledon 2014. “I mean, what she’s done this year is out of this world and I can’t believe I’m the one that actually broke the streak,” Cornet commented on Swiatek’s accomplishments after the tennis match.
Cornet has had the best tournament year and she said she would end her tennis career and exit the sport. She reached her first major quarterfinal in the 2022 Australian Open and she reached the third round of the French. Cornet thinks the reason she’s playing so well is because of the pressure of the finality.
Before the fourth round, Cornet promised herself she wouldn’t be looking on social media, for fear of finding out her opponent for the next round. She just didn’t want to. Cornet said that she just wanted to enjoy a few hours after beating the world’s number one tennis player.
In Gauff’s case, she was defeated in the fourth round by Amanda Anisimova. Anisimova’s win dismissed Gauff from the Wimbledon, but she wasn’t disillusioned by it. Gauff said that she thought her mentality had improved a lot. During the clay season, she was up 4-0 and lost because of her mentality. Now, she’s up 3-0, then goes down a break. She was able to recover from it and win the match anyway.
