The whooping price of Napoleon’s brooch
The artifact of Napoleon’s brooch sold for 3.5 million Swiss Francs (around $4.4 million) at Sotheby’s in Geneva, Switzerland, this weekend.
Sotheby’s hosted annual sales of valuable watches and jewelry for 40 years. The Geneva office is one of the largest exporters of art to New York, London, and Paris. Napoleon used this valuable as a head ornament when he fled Waterloo. He lost this object along with several other objects. These include: medals,
Interest has grown in Napoleon’s valuables after the 100 million dollar heist in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. This grew interest in the artifacts of Napoleon because if a thief wants to steal it, that means that it is a valuable artifact. Eventually, this caught the attention of people, and then people in Europe started researching Napoleon and his journey and artifacts. According to Mr. Meylan, “This ornament is so rare that it should rightfully belong only to the Crown of Prussia and our revered King.“
This shows how valuable the jewel is in terms of the history of what it is and where it came from, which is more valuable than the actual cost of the artifact. Some of the stolen pieces during the Louvre heist in Paris were a theft of an emerald and diamond necklace featuring more than 1000 stones. Another theft was a pair of emerald and Diamond earrings.
Napoleon, who ruled France in 1799, was known to carry jewels with him. Another item that was sold at Sotheby’s in Geneva was a 132.66 beryl worn by Napoleon at his coronation in 1804. Prices for diamonds have fallen drastically in the past few years, because of the volatile economy and the recent obsession with lab–grown diamonds.
