On July 15th, the CDC and the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed a case of human monkeypox in a U.S. citizen who traveled from Nigeria to the United States on two commercial flights.

The U.S. has seen more than 1,800 cases of monkeypox so far. Although is it thought to be an undercount as testing has also lagged, there has been growing concerns about the rate at which the disease could be spreading, especially in New York City, which is the center of many U.S. outbreaks.

Anyone can be infected with this virus although most confirmed cases have been among men.

The disease is characterized by lesions on the skin. They usually clear up on their own but can be extremely painful.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control director, Rochelle Walensky told a news briefing on Friday, “we don’t yet have all the vaccine that we would like in this moment.”

The U.S. has received 370,000 out of nearly 7 million vaccine doses that the government has purchased in total, but millions of the doses are not expected to arrive until 2023.

According to the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, the federal government has distributed about 156,000 doses nationwide and expects to start shipping another 130,000 doses on Monday.

Earlier this week, New York City’s vaccinations website crashed as thousands of people tried to book vaccine appointments all at once. The New York City Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan apologized for the roll-out of the vaccines.

During a call on Tuesday with Biden’s administration officials, New York Mayor, Eric Adams asked for the city to be allocated more doses.

Perhaps Adams apologized to the public for the difficulty in receiving a vaccine, “We own it. You know, those mistakes shouldn’t happen and so we’re working to correct those and do better.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than 12,500 cases of monkeypox have been reported in nearly 70 countries. But thankfully, hundreds of thousands of more doses are expected to arrive soon in the U.S. after American federal health officials said they had completed an inspection of the Danish plant which is supposed to be a vaccine for monkeypox.
