The piece called “Guernica” shows the bombardment of the Spanish town Basque during the Spanish civil war. Guernica shows the torment that the people faced during the bombardment.

You may not make much of this piece, but there is a lot happening. First, you may notice the farm animals, there’s a horse and a bull, and both look startled. You can see what they are feeling through their expression. The horse’s mouth is open, as if it was screaming, and the bull as well had its mouth open.

The people around the beasts were also in a state of panic, you can see how a mother is wailing, as she cradles her dead child, and then off to the right, you notice a man lying dead on the floor, a shattered sword in hand. Then you can see a man from upstairs, coming down to check on the survivors, lantern in hand, or he may be telling the others to go upstairs to hide.

You can interpret art in many ways, especially in war, where you can see the damage caused by others. This is prominent throughout the 21st century, where the painting, Guernica can be applied to the bombing of Fallujah, or even more recently, the invasion of Ukraine, where civilian casualties are high. Art during times of conflict is important because it highlights the struggle others face because of a rash decision in a language we can all understand, no translation is needed to really see the damage dealt by the inhumanities dealt by this world.
